The Thames and Medway Canal

The canal was designed to allow barge traffic to move between the Thames and Medway without taking the long journey around the Hoo Peninsula. Its remaining stretch today runs from Gravesend to Higham and has an interesting military, social and engineering history.

The canal towpath is part of a circular walk that links to the Saxon Shore Way. It runs along National Cycle Path number 1 (part of the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Network) and borders an important bird reserve managed by the RSPB.

The canal is slowly being developed into a green corridor, improving wildlife habitat and encouraging angling, informal boating and other water activities.

The Association was formed to promote the use of the Thames and Medway Canal as a multipurpose amenity. Over the years it has been the guardian of the canal and is now busy on many fronts including restoration, lobbying and fundraising. If you care about conservation, restoration and enhancing your environment then join us.
